Reading & Leeds Festivals part company with Carling

Leeds returns without a headline sponsor

After a nine year partnership Festival Republic announced that Carling will no longer be the headline sponsor or official lager of the Reading and Leeds festivals.

Following a successful long-term partnership, it was by mutual agreement that both parties felt the time was right to pursue new opportunities.

This marks a happy turning point in the festival’s history with Reading Festival reclaiming its prestigious name after the Carling Weekend association. The festival first arrived in Reading in 1971 and has been hosted on the same site on the banks of the river Thames ever since. Festival Republic’s Melvin Benn took over Reading in 1989, when attendance was at an all time low.

The festival underwent a serious shake up and opened with a stellar line-up including New Order, The Pogues, The Mission, The Wonder Stuff and The Sugarcubes, that would put Reading back on the music fans radar and cement the future of the festival for ever more.

SUNDAY EVENING

The Twang, Arcade Fire & Red Hot Chili Peppers

They say that it’s impossible to please everyone? Enter The Twang: that fundamental rule goes out the window. There are elements of their set that anyone can pick out as being to their liking, be it Phil Etheridge’s cheeky chappie loudmouth vocals – a less whiny Mike Skinner – or the urban lyrical style that their music adopts, or the rockier beats and guitar feedback that any Enter Shikari fan would appreciate, or the genuine excitement and appreciation that the band cannot help but ooze. They received a riotous reception on the NME stage which they returned by blowing everybody away with the energy they put into songs like new single Two Lovers and the beautifully crafted Either Way. Etheridge seemed truly bemused that anyone had chosen to watch his band over any other, and that is what seemed to spur him on to give his absolute best.

Watching Arcade Fire can only be described as a heavenly experience. The harmonic multitude of instruments filling the stage create a cross between The Flaming Lips and Pink Floyd when combined, warming thousands on a chilly Sunday evening. Absolutely nothing this weekend can be compared to this bizarre yet enchanting array of soothing synth and strings, hypnotic rhythm and angelic singing which is guaranteed to leave you smiling for hours after.

Not just anyone can close the Leeds festival. Few bands have the legendary status, the back catalogue, the charisma and the balls to undertake the challenge. The Red Hot Chili Peppers tick all the boxes. Their closure on Sunday night will go down as one of the most memorable on record, once they started playing, ironically breaking straight into Can’t Stop, they didn’t stop until the moment they left the stage 2 hours later, between songs were musical interludes, be it a bass solo or a rhythmic pounding by drummer Chad Smith. Anthony Kiedis’ huge vocal range is only really noticeable in a performance spanning this number of songs, the depths of which are visible mainly during their latest release, Hump de Bump. Clearly aiming to please the fans who had hogged the front barrier for the duration of the day specially to see them, the set consisted mostly of lesser known album tracks, although crowd pleasers Californication, By The Way and Give It Away were all present. No one could have closed Leeds 2007 like the Chilis did, they epitomise the spirit of the festival: something for everyone to rock out or chill out to, either way having the time of their life.
SUNDAY ROUND UP

Paramore, The Young Knives & Panic! At The Disco

“Wake up Leeds, everybody dance”, shouted bouncy 18 year old Hayley Williams of Paramore, having been given the arduous task of opening the main stage on the final day of the festival in front of a sleepy crowd looking to enjoy a lazy Sunday. The stunning fiery redhead commanded the attention of the audience while controlling the stage, constantly pressing for crowd participation as she bounds around to saccharine feel-good rock. Everyone was raised from their slumber by the massively energetic Misery Business, inducing mass foot tapping and head banging to tracks from their newest album Riot!, including seriously danceable For A Pessimist I’m Pretty Optimistic.

The Young Knives drew one of the largest crowds of the afternoon to the NME stage, from hardcore fans at the front of the stage to the crowd enjoying the sun under the video screens outside. They were a band to rest to on the grass with a beer and their bright upbeat melodies complimented the perfect weather. Nothing here particularly stood out as special, but their musical talent was obvious and their fanbase appeared to be greatly satisfied.

Brendon Urie of Panic! at the Disco has the makings of a dodgeball champion. He remained respectably calm under a hail of bottles, the band powered through what appeared to be a stripped down set in comparison to last year with little to say to the audience, missing extravagances such as cellos, extra pianos, accordions and a backdrop. Despite often being mocked, their creativity, divergence to any other band performing and lack of arrogance makes them far more deserved of a place on the line up than some of the tedious middle of the road indie rock filling some of the larger slots this weekend. It is absolutely impossible not to smile at the lavishness of the likes of Lying Is the Most Fun A Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off and I Write Sins Not Tragedies, watching a band not taking music writing and performing overly seriously makes it more enjoyable and easier to appreciate.

Fans were instantly impressed with new material showcased, which sounded as though it had taken a stride towards bluesy rock and roll, but retained the over the top shimmy that makes the band who they are. Their only downfall was the apparent lack of energy and look of wanting to be elsewhere, possibly down to the primitive behavior of a tiny minority of the crowd.
SATURDAY ROUND UP

Little Man Tate, Plain White Ts, Jimmy Eat World & Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly

There is a long line of bands to have emerged from the huge Sheffield scene which has taken over the UK this year, however Little Man Tate stand out a mile from the crowd. This is mainly due to the ingenious lyrical quality of their songs: lines such as “He gets home switches on the news/kicks back in his high heel shoes/Switches channels to Eastenders/cleans his house in his red suspenders” from Court Report are just a hint at their hilarious songwriting ability. The ultra catchy Sexy in Latin was the high point of a performance which brightened the start of many afternoons. They lack the popularity of the Arctic Monkeys or The Enemy, but their talent, particularly as songwriters, is far superior.

A large majority of the crowd forming in the Lock Up tent were there on the strength of one song. Plain White T’s have enjoyed masses of airwave time thanks to their stunning acoustic single 'Hey There Delilah', which caused confusion as to why they were performing on a stage reserved for punk rock bands. As it happened, they were fooled. Sounding not dissimilar to The Pixies or Goo Goo Dolls, they performed a mellow rock set with a punk edge thanks to the voice of Tom Higgenson, a refreshing diversion away from hardcore screamo and punk. The moment when the band left the stage leaving Higgenson alone with an acoustic guitar was a highlight of the festival so far; the opening notes that everyone was waiting for sent thousands of volts through the crowd, leaving no one without a grin as wide as the stage itself. Definitely a contender for surprise of the weekend.

The biggest buzz around the arena was about one band that had the honour of gracing two stages. Jimmy Eat World opened the first of their sets with the anthemic 'Salt Sweat Sugar', setting the precedent for the remainder of a performance that thrilled the mass that had gathered to watch, an unusual phenomenon not usually experience that early in the afternoon. Material from their new album was impressive, sounding as though they plan on veering from the mellow sounds and returning to their heavier roots. However the singles caused the most excitement, particularly The Middle, which teased the crowd before the band reappears a few hours later.

The anti-poverty banner was off-putting to some who at first glance expected a Bob Geldof rant from Sam Duckworth of Get Cape Wear Cape Fly. Fortunately it turned out only to be a subtle backdrop to a stunning laid back skacoustic blend. The sheer beauty of the music that this band creates far outstrips anything that Chris Martin could ever consider writing, songs like the mind blowing War of the Worlds are as powerful as any rock ballad, but minus any hint of nausea or tongue in cheek. It proved the be the most awe inspiring 45 minutes that are likely to be seen this weekend.
FRIDAY EVENING ROUND UP

Fall Out Boy, Lostprophets, Charlotte Hatherley, CSS, Seasick Steve, The Smashing Pumpkins & New Found Glory

Fighting through X Men, Batman, tigers and cows tends to be the norm for the average Leeds punter darting from stage to stage. However on Friday afternoon it was more difficult than usual, mainly from trying to figure out if you’re hallucinating from heatstroke or if Wolverine really did just dance past you.

Were Fall Out Boy struggling somewhat for material? They managed to slip a huge array of covers, including Michael Jackson’s Beat It and an R’n’B remix with R Kelly and Akon, into their abstract yet lively set. For an ‘emo’ band they appeared to be enjoying themselves immensely, bouncing their way through the singles This Ain’t a Scene it’s an Arms Race and Sugar We’re Going Down, their obvious excitement and pleasure with the thrilled crowd hidden in true rock fashion by their dour expressions.

Second Welsh rockers of the day (and one of the only two British acts on the main stage on Friday) Lostprophets were extremely impressive, showing off 3-man harmonies during latest release Never Gonna Catch Tomorrow.

Though as metal bands go they have always been one of the more imaginative and willing to experiment with a range of styles, from the funkier pop of Town Called Hypocrisy, through the mellower Rooftops to the heavy nu-metal Shinobi Vs Dragon Ninja. This diversity clearly paid off judging by the huge reception they received.

Charlotte Hatherley has had minimal success since leaving Ash, and unfortunately isn’t anywhere near as exciting as her previous incarnation. Her performance on the Carling Stage was easy on the ear and she is a pleasure to watch. The image is set for her to become a 21st century Suzi Q.

A band of few demands, CSS’ rider must have been spent on helium for decorating the NME/Radio 1 stage with masses of balloons. However brightest of all was lead singer Lovefoxxx in a sparkly suit made entirely from glitter which she stripped from after a hugely exciting opener. The band are one of the more respectable of those sitting in the indie electro bracket, thrilling those waving glowsticks as much as those raising devil horns. All around are drawn by some seriously sexy Brazilian accents to their songs about making love, enjoying alcohol and having a damn good time.

A more appropriate setting for Seasick Steve may have been a rocking chair on the porch of a wooden shack in the deep south of the US of A, but the Carling Stage made an intimate enough venue for this little known singer and his cult following which is slowly increasing through word of mouth. This old man with a guitar, dungarees and a Captain Birdseye beard shouldn’t have been so captivating, but he stood out a mile from the young and trendy of the other stages with his bluesy storytelling, his tale of a stepdad and his daughter at the end of his set alone making him well worth watching. Whether the crowd were just embracing the novelty of something different or genuinely appreciated Steve was difficult to distinguish, but this modern day Johnny Cash is something special and should certainly be respected.

There was something amazingly hypnotic about watching Billy Corgan performing live; The Smashing Pumpkins frontman makes an eerie sight in the dark, almost like something from a Tim Burton movie. Closing the Main Stage to a huge buzz of excitement, having only recently reformed, they are stunning to watch. The flux between nauseatingly abstract and sublime beauty is captivating, they are by far the most interesting band of the day and it is almost impossible to turn away from them. The single Tarantula, recorded after their reform, showed that they’ve got the ability to keep with the times, pleasing the newer inexperienced fans.

At first glance New Found Glory may appear to be from the same barrel as the likes of Bowling for Soup or Good Charlotte, but are in reality more mature with years more experience. They are still full of teenage angst, but in the later stages of growing out of it. Singer Jordan Pundik was clearly still on a buzz after breaking off from the Warped tour to headline the Lock Up stage with a huge array of anthems instantly satisfying the young crowd, including My Friends Over You and a fantastic cover of Kiss Me by Sixpence None The Richer. What was pleasing was the impression the band gave that their fans were the most important thing to them: the lights were turned on the audience for one song to allow the band to see the circle pits and excited moshing, and the smiles on the stage spoke volumes. For those not wanting to take their music too seriously and looking for a bit of fun to end their night, this was a perfect conclusion.

The Hold Steady are one of the most underrated bands around today. So their performance in the Carling tent to a small audience was something really special. Singer, Craig Finn is clearly very shy in front of a crowd, grinning from ear to ear while he dances awkwardly during songs, but once he’s in front of the microphone he belts out his stories of partying in New Jersey. Severely inebriated tonight, he struggles through the fantastic crowd pleaser Chips Ahoy! and You Can Make Him Like You, but he is saved by the rest of the band, particularly keyboard player who always intrigues with his dashing 1940s attire.
FRIDAY ROUND UP

The Ghost Of A Thousand, Gym Class Heroes, Billy Talent & The Used

After a destructive Thursday night you could practically taste the collective hangover in the Lock Up tent. The apparent antidote: a can of Relentless and a dosage of hardcore punk in the form of Ghost of a Thousand. Their outstanding drummer’s tribal opening rhythm blew away any cobwebs, launching them into an angry barrage of sheer energy – think Metallica with circle pits replacing mammoth guitar solos. The highlight of their set New Toy screamed and thrashed its way through an exciting 4 minutes, standing out in an exceptional performance.

Their competition came from the main stage in the form of emo-rappers Gym Class Heroes, protégés of Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz, and Hellogoodbye, who were surprisingly well received despite a mass of tedious Daft Punk imitations lacing their own electric dance-pop.

"Who invited the Canadians?" squeaked lead vocalist Ben Kowalewicz of Billy Talent, jesting with the audience. The Vancouver rockers were a hidden gem among today’s main stage lineup, drawing intrigued punters with the fantastic Muse-esque Devil in a Midnight Mass. Excitement really started to build towards the end of their phenomenal set, particularly for Try Honesty and Red Flag, a protest against the leaders of today screwing up the world for its next generation of inhabitants.

The Used faced the particularly easy task of connecting with the rebellious teenagers: "Everybody stick your middle fingers in the air…this is for your mom, your dad, your school teachers…", however knowing their audience paid off. Singles such as The Bird and The Worm and Pretty Handsome Awkward gave the kids what they wanted, songs about being scared and alone in the world and getting angry with authority. Their catchy tuneful lite-metal is extremely easy to listen to, lyrically it’s not particularly cheerful but some laid back guitar melodies provide a shimmer of light.
THE ALTERNATIVE STAGE

A whole host of comedy, cabaret, film, art/music collaborations, talks, quizzes...

The Carling Weekend: Reading and Leeds Festivals 2007 is already the event of the summer with over 150 bands playing on six stages, a host of campsite and late night entertainment and the biggest and best headliners of the year preparing to take to the stages over the August Bank Holiday.

Now we are proud to announce the debut of The Alternative Stage at both sites, featuring a host of unique musical and multi media collaborations, top name comedy and cabaret and audience Q & A’s to give you an unrivalled bill of exclusive entertainment throughout the weekend.

Leeds gets a special treat by starting a day early on the Thursday evening with a very special production called Dream Of An Opium Eater. A unique collaboration featuring Ben Calvert from Killing Joke, Ivar S. Peersen from Enslaved, Reuben Gotto from Twin Zero / Johnny Truant and Julia Ruzicka from Million Dead, the quartet will revise the old silent movie tradition of a pianist accompanying films, by improvising a soundtrack of intense metal to accompany horror shorts. Also on the Thursday at the North’s only festival is a very rare showing for cult classic ‘American Hardcore’. The film that documents the US underground punk scene from 1980 to 1986 and features the legends that are Black Flag, Bad Brains, The Replacements and a host of others has never gained a general release in the UK and any serious fan of US alternative music will find the film both fascinating and enthralling.

Both sites will get a real treat in the form of a specially curated night courtesy of Transgressive Records, visiting Leeds on Friday before making the journey south to Reading for the Saturday. Featuring audio visual sets from the Transgressive roster, including the much tipped Battle and Jeremy Warmsley alongside Absentee, 3 Trapped Tigers, Noah And The Whale, Beans On Toast, Lucy And The Caterpillar and Mechnical Bride, these are one-off performances created for the festival and promise to be very special indeed.

Able support will come from Transgressive DJs and label bosses Tim and Toby are looking forward to making your evening memorable in all the right ways; “Our nights at Reading and Leeds will be a snapshot of music in all its incarnations and forms – every act is different to the next, and attempting to do something unique and special. The video footage will see some familiar material aired, and some exclusive imagery / videos that aren’t quite so commonplace. We’re hoping to surprise, and delight, and also make you groove your arse off.”

There will be frequent shuttle buses running from Leeds City Railway Station and Leeds Coach Station to Bramham Park. There is also a service from York Station on Thursday and back to York Station on Monday. Click here to download the full timetable in Excel (.xls) format.

The shuttle bus stops will be signposted from the Railway Stations and Coach Station.

There is plenty of capacity on the buses for all of your stuff and you will not have to walk far to the campsites onsite from the bus station nor will you have to walk far from the Railway Station / Coach Station to the bus stop.

The shuttle bus service will also run to and from the Tesco Extra supermarket at Seacroft so that you can go and stock up on essentials although there is also a supermarket onsite selling everything you might need at the registered retail price. Consider using the shuttle bus to get to and from Tescos if you need to go there as it is likely to be much quicker and easier than leaving the site with your car and coming back in again.

Using public transport and the shuttle bus is the best way to arrive at Leeds Festival. The shuttle buses get you nearer to a festival entrance than any other means of arriving onsite, they run regularly, the operation should be smooth and hassle free and there will be enough shuttle buses to meet the demand.

The shuttle buses will drop you off very close to the railway station or bus station and you will not have to queue as long to get on a shuttle bus as you would in a car to get to or leave the car park. Plus you can make friends on the way, enjoy a drink and feel good about your reduced impact on the environment and the fact that a part of your fare is being donated to charity!

The fares for this year's shuttle bus service are being held at the same price as last year to encourage you to use it. The journey time from Leeds to Bramham Park is around 45 minutes.

The shuttle bus fares are:

£4 single from Leeds Railway / Coach Station to Bramham Park
£7.50 open return from Leeds Railway / Coach Station or York to / from Bramham Park
£5 cheap day return from Leeds Railway / Coach Station to / from Bramham Park
£15 travel card – as many journeys as you like to any of the destinations from Wednesday to Monday.
£3 return to Tescos.

You can buy tickets on the bus or at the bus station onsite at Yellow Gate.

TOPMAN Stage & Welcome To Leeds 07 Party

Dance To The Radio start the party at Leeds

Leeds will kick off on the Thursday evening with Leeds based label DANCE TO THE RADIO hosting a "Welcome to Leeds 07" party on the Topman Stage....

DANCE TO THE RADIO
present

FORWARD RUSSIA
THE WALLBIRDS
SKY LARKIN
SHUT YOUR EYES & YOU'LL BURST INTO FLAMES
GRAMMATICS
plus DANCE TO THE RADIO DJs

Whiskas, founder of Dance To The Radio, and member of i Forward Russia! tells us why the Leeds scene is so exciting now......

"Over the last few years, there has been a ridiculous amount of fantastic bands coming from Leeds, that's why we started Dance To The Radio in early 2005, starting off releasing records featuring iLiKETRAiNS, The Sunshine Underground as well as ¡Forward, Russia! That Leeds Festival has recognised this and had a local band stage for the last couple of years (is that right, has it been 2 years?) has been a great recognition to this fact.

Hot on the success of The Pigeon Detectives top 3 album, we are proud to host the welcoming party for this year's festival - featuring ¡Forward, Russia!s first gig since returning from Seattle having completed album number two. Joining, will be Sheffield's The Wallbirds as well as more established DTTR act's Sky Larkin, Shut Your Eyes & You'll Burst Into Flames and the Grammatics who should all be releasing new material later on in the year."
Car sharing will help save you money by sharing the travel costs, reduce the amount of congestion on the roads resulting in you arriving to more quickly as well as being kind to our environment.

If you are traveling by car please visit the Leeds Festival Car Share Scheme operated by Liftshare. Car sharing will help save you money by sharing the travel costs, reduce the amount of congestion on the roads resulting in you arriving to more quickly as well as being kind to our environment.

FreeWheelers Alternative site.

However all arrangements which you make are private arrangements between you and other sharers. The Festival does not arrange lift sharing or have any liability to or for lift sharers.

Safety first: Make sure you know the identity of the person or persons you are sharing with. Having a home telephone number is sensible precaution and make sure you leave details of the lift share, the driver and passenger's number(s) and home address if possible with friends and/or family. Take your mobile phone with you. If you are at all uncomfortable with any arrangements, or the condition of the vehicle being used, then make other plans. If a vehicle is not taxed it is possible the driver has no driving licence, no insurance and no MOT.

Safety first: trust your instincts and use common sense.
Carling Stage Line Up announcement

THE CARLING STAGE returns to the festival for the 9th year and will again host the best collection of up and coming talent.

THE CARLING STAGE returns to the festival for the 9th year and will again host the best collection of up and coming talent. The Carling Stage has become a stepping-stone for many bands as they make their way to the top. Historically the Carling Stage has seen Muse, Kaiser Chiefs, Ash, Kasabian and many others make their first festival appearances and has continued to prove that this is the starting place for the talent of the future. Last year saw The View entertain the crowds from the Carling Stage whilst fans of Klaxons were bursting out of the side of the tent; both bands this year are on the bill for the Radio 1/NME stage.

Matt Helders from the Arctic Monkey’s suggests it could be fate……
“When we played on the Carling Stage there was a bit of a buzz around us but we had no idea what would happen. Until then we’d only played to audiences of 300-800. Six thousand came to the Carling tent. People said it was like when the Foo Fighters first played. It’s not a foolproof plan that on filling the Carling tent you become famous, but it has happened quite a bit.”

With the stage hosting nearly all of NME’s recommended new bands of the summer festival season over the three days alongside some exclusive performances from some of the most interesting names in alternative rock, organisers Mean Fiddler are proud to announce the following names for this year.

Reading Friday/Leeds Saturday

A YEAR OF FESTIVALS

What constitutes a perfect music festival? Does such a thing really exist? If so, is it out there waiting to be found?

What constitutes a perfect music festival? Does such a thing really exist? If so, is it out there waiting to be found?

Is there a set of individual elements which, brought together, would create the perfect festival? Can an individual moment define a perfect festival and, if so, what could it be?

Jarvis Hammond will be travelling to twelve music festivals during 2007, festivals that are spread across three continents and nine countries, in search of answers and he'd like you to help.
